Kelly's Tree Care at the Ontario Tree Climbing Championships
The 27th Annual Ontario Tree Climbing Championships were held on September 12, 2015 at Dominion Arboretum in Ottawa. This yearly event is open to any Ontario member of the International Society of Arboriculture (I.S.A.).
Men and women from across the province compete within their separate divisions in five preliminary events which include the Belayed Speed Climb, Static Foot-Lock, Work Climb, Aerial Rescue, and Throw Line. Depending on the event, points are earned through speed, style, and accuracy. Competitors with the highest points qualify to compete in the Master’s Challenge which determines the winner. Typically the top 4 male competitors and top 2 female competitors vie for the Masters. The winner’s from each division then go on to compete at the North American Tree Climbing Championships and the Internationals. Unlike “logger-type” sports, these championships reflect skills which a professional arborist routinely performs.
Kelly’s Tree Care continues to be an active participant at these competitions. This year a total of six employees competed (men’s division: Graham Sward, Sean Devos, and Alex Peters; and women’s division: Wenda Li, Jenn Carroll, and Rachael Kowaleski) with an additional four other employees who volunteered either as scoring judges or technicians. Mike Watson, co-owner of Kelly’s Tree Care, is also the current chair of the Ontario Tree Climbing Committee.
