Humber College Urban Arboriculture program (First year, 2018)
Being drawn to the outdoors and environmental conservation, I began my journey into the outside world through an environmental leadership programme in high school. Here I was able to learn in an outdoor setting and was able to guide young students through a basic ecology programme as an environmental educator. With this, I proceeded to the Memorial University of Newfoundland where I studied Environmental Studies with a concentration in Outdoor Environmental Pursuits becoming certified in kayaking, and experiencing many more outdoor activities. Although I was leaning towards a career in ecotourism, I decided it wasn't my thing and ended up working in manufacturing when I moved back to Toronto. Still wanting to pursue a career focused on working outdoors, I decided to enroll in the Humber College Urban Arboriculture programme as a challenge, and this finally was where my want to work outside had finally been fulfilled! Still fresh in the industry, I hope to fine-tune my skills through Kelly's and am eager to learn as much as I can as I move up into the trees.
Toronto has an estimated 26.6%-28% tree canopy cover representing 10.2 millions trees. Of these trees, 60% are on private property, 34% are in parks and ravines, and 6% are City-owned.
